Live Journal

A year before being diagnosed with cancer, Reid had begun to share his thoughts in the web-based "Live Journal".  Once he began cancer treatments, he used this journal to keep well-wishers up-to-date on his medical condition and whereabouts, although he often hid the true pain, suffering, and sacrifices he was enduring in an effort to beat his cancer.  He also used the journal to share details of some of the happier times during this period.  Many friends and family regularly posted comments and responses to his entries.  Reid made his last entry into this journal on Sunday, April 3rd, when it looked like he might be getting well enough to return home later in the week after more than a month in the hospital.  That never happened.  To get to his Live Journal, click HERE.  Feel free to post a response.  Family and friends are continuing to read this journal and look forward to seeing new postings.

Letters & Cards

In the weeks following Reid's Memorial Service, we received hundreds of cards, letters, and e-mails from folks expressing their sympathy for our loss.  In many of these, the authors provided extensive personal and thoughful reflections on Reid and his impact on their lives.   Click on the items in the list below for letters and passages that particularly touched our hearts.

A Brother's Address to His Classmates

As Senior Class President, Weston was required to address his class at graduation ceremonies in June 2006.  In his address, Weston chose to reference the inspiration his brother Reid left behind.  Weston challenged himself and his classmates to make the most of every opportunity to grow and learn -- just as Reid had done during his lifetime -- as they embarked upon the world.  A transcript of Weston's address can be found

here.

Other Correspondence

As Reid battled his disease, he often received cards and letters and e-mail from individuals who used those communications to share how they were inspired by his courage, optimism, and humor.  Those words were moving and sometimes prophetic.

Reid's Own Formal Writings

Below are a number of essays and writings from Reid.  Many were composed early in his junior or senior year in high school as part of applications to college and scholarships.  They reveal the thoughts, perspective, and outlook of a young man who was nearing the peak of his academic, athletic, and extra-curricular accomplishments and who had in his grasp a promising and limitless future ahead.
