Cancer Research Program

Description

The Reid R. Sacco Memorial Foundation will provide funds to support research directed at finding cures and better treatments for cancers affecting young adults, particularly sarcoma (including rhabdomyosarcoma, the Ewing's family of sarcomas, and other rarer variants).
Objective

To support targeted and well-directed programs in the development of cures and better treatments for cancers affecting young adults, including programs identifying and/or evaluating new molecular, biological, radiological, and surgical modalities -- alone or in combination -- specifically promising in treating sarcomas.
Recent Developments (Wall Street Journal Article, July 5, 2005)

On July 5, 2005, the Wall Street Journal published a significant article highlighting the problems with the treatment of cancer in "young adults".  For us, the article sadly validated all of our suspicions about how poorly so-called modern medicine is equipped to treat young adults with cancer, like Reid.   Medicine is lacking the tools -- both the medicines and the mindsets -- to treat cancers in young adults.  It was this gap in medicine that failed Reid.  It is this gap we hope to help close with the support and education that this Foundation can provide.
Fund-raising Goals
The kinds of breakthroughs and new modalities we intend to target require a major financial commitment.  Our immediate goal is to raise a minimum of $250,000 before beginning to allocate funds to specific programs.

Funding Process

We've begun the dialogue with oncology clinicians and researchers about new treatment concepts that, if successfully developed, could most benefit young adults facing cancer.  We continue to discuss which programs, projects, and initiatives could most benefit from financial support from the Foundation.
