Objectives for the Foundation’s Support of Cancer Research

To support targeted and well-directed programs in the development of cures and better treatments for cancers affecting young adults, including programs identifying and/or evaluating new molecular, biological, radiological, and surgical modalities -- alone or in combination -- specifically promising in treating sarcomas

Fund-raising Goals

The kinds of breakthroughs and new modalities we intend to target require a major financial commitment.  Our immediate goal was to raise a minimum of $250,000 before beginning to allocate funds to specific programs.  Having achieved that, we have begun to fund programs matching the Foundation's objectives for supporting cancer research.

AYA Cancer Program at Connecticut Children's Medical Center

In late 2007 we were pleased to announce that the Reid Sacco Memorial Foundation had begun funding a new Adolescent & Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Program at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, under the direction of Dr. Michael Isakoff.

This Program includes a multidisciplinary team composed of specialists in oncology, general surgery, orthopedic surgical oncology, radiation oncology, nurses, social workers, a consulting psychologist, radiologists, and patient life specialists.  This team treats patients with a wide range of cancers including leukemias, lymphomas, sarcomas, brain tumors, and germ cell tumors.  In addition to his bringing to the Program his inspired leadership and a commitment to build a virtual network linking experts and centers-of-excellence in AYA cancers, Dr. Isakoff has a special expertise in bone and soft tissue sarcomas.

Your contributions to the Reid Sacco Memorial Cancer Research Fund, including your participation as rider or sponsor in Reid's Ride, makes it possible for this Program to work toward its mission, and allows it to offer patients a greater number of emerging treatment options.  This is especially important in the treatment of sarcomas in this underserved patient population.

If you would like to make a contribution directly to this AYA Cancer Program at CCMC, or for more information about the Center or the Program, please go to the Center's website.
